My 64gb iPad 3 is still on 6.1.2. I have the notification that 6.1.3 is ready to be installed, but I've never installed it. I'm planning on selling it when the next iPad comes out, so should I just leave it at 6.1.2 because someone else might find extra value in that, or should I just upgrade to 6.1.3 and then to 7 before I sell it? Or does it not matter because when I reset it to factory condition it won't remain a 6.1.2 anyway?

If you plan on using iTunes to restore the device before selling then there's no point in any of this. Doing that will install the latest firmware with no way to downgrade or jailbreak. Best option then is to hope that the iOS 7 jailbreak is released before you sell it.

That's what I thought might happen, and I'm guessing there is no way to reset an iPad to sell to someone else without using iTunes.

Thanks!

Only if you connect with the right buyer.
Remember, the jailbreak community is very small compared to Apple users as a whole, especially where iPads are concerned.

Yes, but there is no way to pass on the 6.1.2 if I want clear out all my data, right??

If you are jailbroken, ILEX Rat or Semi-Restore

Thanks! But this presents now as the original question: is it worthwhile to jailbreak my 6.1.2 iPad 3 now so I can use Semi-Restore to sell it at someone at increased value, or will it not really be that much more desirable as a jailbroken iPad than one running 7?

As I already stated, you have to find that "right" person.

The last few jailbreakable devices I sold which had preserved firmware were bought by people who didn't give a hoot about the option to jailbreak.

If the device isn't jailbroken, you can settings -> general -> reset -> erase all content and settings

I have not ever used this method before so I can't give any comments on how well this will work

Edit: this method will keep the device on the same iOS firmware version

Correct.
If its still stock then erase all and sell it on 6.1.2
Someone who would like it jb will probably bid exta for a chance to have a jb iPad.
That's what I would do and advertise it as jb eligible.

Thanks, guys!!! That's great to know!

If I was in the market it would add $50. in value to me.
For example, if you were going to ask $300. it would then be worth $350.

Try finding the right buyer. I myself would be ready to pay, say, 20-30% extra for being able to JB right now for, say, f.lux, instead of having to wait months. I'm sure a lot of other people are similar to me.
