I have an old late '07 whitebook. I do plan to replace it but not for a few months yet.

I've used it with *some* kind of stand starting only a few months after I got it. When I'm at my desk, I prefer a larger, separate keyboard and mouse, so I use a taller stand (currently radtech, soon to be replaced by a griffin elevator), and most of the time I've also had a separate stand for when I use it away from my desk, including when traveling (currently aviiq - the folding one).

But I was wondering if I really need one for the away-from-desk use :) As far as I know there's two issues at play: ventilation and ergonomics. Ergonomics-wise it seems it's nicer to have the bottom at a slight angle, but I can try it without on a couple of library/starbucks occasions and see if it works. So the only thing that concerns me still is the ventilation. Also - the screen sometimes 'wobbles' when I type, but I don't know how much more stable it would be without a stand.

Anyway. The point I'm trying to make in this slightly disorganized way is that after about four years with stands I'm thinking, hey, what if I don't need one at all? It's always nice to reexamine one's prejudices lol, makes your life easier eventually :) It's also because I could be moving house sometime after spring, so for the past couple of months I've been on a big simplify-and-declutter kick :) I'm done with the obvious stuff like old bank statements. unwanted gifts, and ill-fitting clothes, so I'm looking at more nuanced aspects of things now :)

So...what all do you think about stands for laptop-only use?
