Is an OS installed onto a drive ONLY usable by the computer that installed it?

Question - I live on the other side of the country from my parents, and trying to help them with a late 2007 iMac I bought for them a few years back. Their hard drive crashed, and I have a spares here in TX. If I format and install Mac OS X Snow Leopard from a retail box family pack DVD onto a hard drive using my mid-2011 iMac and mail this to them (they'll boot via FireWire for a few weeks until I visit over Easter) will this work?
