Your thoughts, what would you miss if you too decided never to update iOS?
Security updates. If it’s just a phone and text without using financial apps, websites or emails connected to your finances, then it doesn’t really matter.

The updates occasionally bring new features but the last useful one that I remember is to copy text on a photograph. I can’t think of any other update that included something I really use.

Of course updates rarely bother me because if they have a new feature that I dislike, I don’t use it. Lately AutoCorrect has gone off the rocker for me. It was always not great but now it will replace words that make no sense. For example, I might say I’m going to the store, but it might use the word two instead of to. I suspect this is some failure of AI or as I like to call it “Apple unIntelligence”

For my use I need the latest security updates. If you don’t need security updates because you don’t do anything important on your phone then maybe don’t update. The only downside I can see is some apps might not work if you hold off updating for too long. no.

I don't understand posts like these. Apple Intelligence is an opt-in feature. If you don't want to use it, don't turn it on. Your phone and Siri will work the same as before.

If you still don't want to upgrade, what happens when your phone dies or you need a new one? You'll be forced to upgrade then. Unless you plan to switch to something else, might as well bite the bullet and rip the band-aid off now to stay up-to-date and secure.

I have decided I am out of the AI game. I am leaving my iPhone 16 Pro on iOS 18.0.1 and will not upgrade.
The complexity and complications of Apple's AI is a bit frustrating.

No way. Security updates are important. My stuff is *locked* down, and I still worry. Installing all updates as they come out, using Yubikeys, advanced data protection, and stolen device protection (always) is the bare minimum IMHO. Everything that matters is locked behind passwords that are dozens of characters long, and every password is unique.

The only thing I wish is that more sites would use Passkeys -- having a login that I can't know is even better than a login that I don't know.

TL;DR: Upgrade your device unless you want to be p0wned by China or some other country/scammer.

Battery life could be not as good on 18.1.1 or 18.2

If you don’t care about Ai and have decent performance “security updates” wouldn’t sway me

If you aren’t some high profile celebrity or a president of a country you’re probably goood lol

New updates are the Wild West quality control wise. Squash one bug you didn’t notice and introduce 3 new ones that you do

I had a feeling this wouldn't be a popular notion.
iDB just came out with an article with a tutorial of how to turn off Apple's AI features on your
new iPhone.
https://www.idownloadblog.com/2024/12/11/how-to-turn-off-apple-intelligence/

I am grateful I don't have to do any of that as iOS 18.0.1 doesn't offer a bit of it.

It's not a popular notion as it's completely misinformed. As BigBlur already said, Apple Intelligence is OPT-IN. You don't have to do anything if you didn't turn it on in the first place.

Indeed. The whole premise of this thread is based on a non-existent problem. There can be valid reasons not to install an update, this isn't one of them.

15PM. Batter life is fairly consistent up through 18.2 with apple intelligence features enabled.

It has already been said, but there's not much else to say. Just don't opt in. Now it uses none of your storage. As far as battery drain goes, it is noticeable when actively using image playground or genmoji, but otherwise my battery life on my 15 pro running 18.2 has been no worse than 18.1.

Apple announced iOS 18.2.1 is now available.
I will (continue) to pass.
iOS 18.0.1 is running strong. Excellent battery life and not a single issue. Couple all of that without the bloat and
nonsense of AI and my iPhone 16 pro is running like a top.

I don't quite understand the point OP. I know you don't want Apple Intelligence or any of the associated software, but that isn't a requirement as has been stated many times. If it was something like iOS 17.7.2 where you wanted the older look or less bugs, this would be a bit more understandable. I'm just kinda lost as to why you would have the latest phone that banked heavily on these features that you don't want.

I’m really curious... Suppose Apple released all these new features (Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, enhanced Siri, etc.) as part of iOS 18 and didn't use the "Apple Intelligence" branding/marketing at all. Would people still be afraid of it then? I mean, we've gotten AI/ML features long before this (i.e. people/pet recognition, object recognition, nudity detection, predictive text, memories, wallpaper suggestions, etc.).

I really don't care if someone uses Apple Intelligence or not, but I don't think this is exactly a strong argument for not using it. I'm on 18.2.1 with Apple Intelligence turned on. My phone runs great and also has excellent battery life. I'm getting at least three or four days between charges. It's not like it's constantly running in the background and draining the battery. It's only going to drain the battery when you're doing something such as generating images in Image Playground.

I really don’t think this would be as big of a deal if it weren’t hyped so much by Apple as a “new” AI thing.

I just caught this headline:

Apple’s Next Big iOS Update Will Turn on Apple Intelligence, Whether You Want It or Not

My iPhone SE(2020) is still on iOS 17.3.

AI as a preprogrammed/prepaid/prelearned intelligence is an oxymoron.

I am sure there was always a way to handle repetitive tasks without the introduction of the AI bubble.
