Is anyone familiar with decent indexing software?

I have a large number of files I'm trying to manage (100,000+ Word documents, countless PDF's, WordPerfect documents, and more). I would like some sort of software that would index the files once and allow me to search the index and contents of the files very quickly (even if the drive containing the files isn't attached).

Is this possible and if not, what would you suggest?
