Trying to weigh up the options for when the iPhone finds its way to the UK. I have my heart set on getting one but because my voice call usage has never justified getting a contract phone, I have always been on PAYG which suits me perfectly.
Like many others, I'm unsure about the idea of paying £35 a month for minutes and texts I may never use so unlocking the phone and using a PAYG SIM inside would be great. The plan would be to use data on Wi-Fi for the vast majority of the time and only using GPRS/EDGE very briefly if I need it for checking emails, etc with one of the various £1 per day options offered by most UK carriers.
However, I am aware of reports that the iPhone is accessing data even when you are not using it and have auto email checking switched off. So, my question is how much background data does the iPhone really use and would PAYG credit be drained quickly with this alone?
