Is it worth it, or is AppFresh like the plethora of Windows applications that claim to update your software (but in reality are useless)?

I had it for quite a while and found it quite effective. However, in looking to cut some "bloat" from my system, I switched to the nice little widget App Update. It doesn't actually download the apps for you, but it takes you either to Macupdate, Versiontracker, or the Apple site to download. It keeps just as up-to-date as AppFresh

Doesn't most apps check for and install updates themselves nowdays? At least most of the apps I use does.
