is apple remote desktop right for me?

I need a program where I can log into my home computer from work.

Will apple remote desktop be able to do this or do the computers have to be on the same network?

can anyone recommend another program if ARD wont do this?

Far more expensive and complex than is necessary. LogMeIn is a good option, there are several others that other users will chime in with, I'm sure.

EDIT: Actually, if you have an iCloud account then Back To My Mac can do it for free without any additional software. Just turn on File Sharing and Screen Sharing in System Preferences -> Sharing, depending on which functions you want to access.
