a friend of mine bought an iphone 4 from the store in the mall this weekend

he told me it had 4.0.2 and he cant jailbreak it

i cant confirm this myself but i would take his word for it

I've heard that when new firmware comes out apple store employees open all phones in stock and upgrade them then reseal them.

I guess it depend in localized stock, 2 coworkers got theirs this weekend, one got it at AT&T another got it shipped home from Apple.com, AT&T one is on 4.0.1, the Apple's one is on 4.0.2

I got a Warranty Replacement from Apple last night right before they closed, and it was on 4.0.1. However, I messed up my phone trying to restore my jailbroken apps from Cydia app Aptbackup, and my phone kept crashing into safe mode.

Had to restore as new which meant upgrading to 4.0.2. Luckily and to my relief (I was very nervous), Apple is still signing 4.0.1 so you can download it and restore from 4.0.1 if you get a 4.0.2 phone for now. I wouldn't wait long though.

It sounds as though you must've clicked on something to upgrade you to 4.0.2.
Whenever I've had to restore my iphone, I've never been forced to upgrade.
If it did happen, I'd make sure to d/l the software I want to restore to and do an <option>+restore.

thats unconvincing logic and id rather have proof before believing something. call me radical.

It's just common sense. It'd be a waste of time and money to open up the iPhones, update them and seal them back up, when the customer can do it themselves when they get home.

i was with my friend this weekend and he purchased 2 32's from the apple store and both had 4.0.1

Agreed. Opening up the phones, upgrading the OS, and then resealing them is about the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time.

As of now (10:42 AM Central time), Apple is still signing 4.0.1 SHSH blobs (I know this because I just restored an iPhone in DFU mode.) If you can get a phone soon, I'd make sure the blobs are saved on Cydia ASAP, either by JB-ing the device directly, or using TinyUmbrella. This way, when the window closes, you should be fine. If the device is at 4.0.2, now is the time to DFU restore and downgrade to 4.0.1.

No, you didn't hear that. You made it up because that's what you think they do. I can confirm that this isn't true, having received more than 5 replacement iPhones.

Bought 2 iphone 4s today, 4.0.2
As of 5PM PST today (08/16/10)was able to DFU restore them to 4.0.1. Apple is still signing the blobs.

Backup those blobs! This won't last long.
