I mean will it work fine with any gsm sim card in the world?

and will it work with LTE networks here in the US such as AT&T LTE?

I'm Canadian, and I've lived in Europe for the past 3 years but living in the US now. I only buy unlocked phones and I've never had issues in the past, but 3G is different from LTE. You'll probably have no issue getting 3G but the Verizon phone is a better bet for LTE in different markets,

But, if I understand the models correctly, the Verizon model is incompatible with all the LTE bands used in Canada, correct? Not sure if this matters to the OP, but I wanted to make sure I understood the nuances of the different models. I know all three iPhone 5 models can roam just fine on GSM worldwide.

My understanding is that the iPhone 5 sold in Canada is the same hardware as the AT&T iPhone 5 that's sold in the States. Is that correct? I'm assuming it's really difficult (if not impossible) to get the Verizon iPhone 5 handset from a store in Canada since it seems like the AT&T iPhone 5 supports all the LTE bands used in Canada. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Correct. You won't be able to get the Verizon iPhone in Canada because it is not offered there. If you stay in the United States or Canada, get the unlocked handset in Canada and you will be fine in either country (For GSM and LTE). If you travel the world, you may want to consider getting the US Verizon iPhone, which will work with the most LTE frequencies around the world, but will not work with AT&T's LTE. Just depends on where you want to use it. Short answer: Buying an iPhone unlocked in Canada should be fine for you if you live in the US or Canada and of course will work worldwide with any GSM carrier, just the LTE might not work.
