Okay, so I moved across town (about 10 miles) and still have the same High Speed Internet Provider (Comcast).

At my previous location with my old cable modem, I was able to get speed of around 18mbps. At the new house I was only about to achieve speeds of about 7-8mbps. After calling Comcast to complain they told me it's because I didn't have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem which they would be happy to lease to me for $5 a month.

So i went and picked up the leased modem just to see if what they were telling me was true, and after initially getting it provisioned, it still performed at the same speed as my old DOCSIS 2.0 modem. They lady then told me to restart my browser and try again, and sure enough, i'm getting twice the speed now.

I feel like I've been scammed or something.

Does anyone have any expertise in this area?

DOCSIS 2.0 works up to about 20-22Mbps.

You didn't need DOCSIS 3.0 modem. My guess is you weren't provisioned properly when you moved.

But, you didn't need a new modem, period.
