I am going to install iOS 23 dev beta 3 on a test SE3 iPhone, to experience it first hand. But with iPadOS, I only have one, my main machine.

Do you think iPadOS dev beta 3 is stable enough to be installed on my daily driver iPad, or not? I’m eager to test it out on my M2 iPad Pro and submit lots of feedback, but I’m afraid of overheating that might damage the battery…

Just wait for the Public Beta. That said, I actually haven't had many issues in beta 2 and 3. And even with beta 1 I didn't lose any data. Battery life seems relatively normal for me (M1, 11" pro)

The key word here is beta. Beta is never stable enough to be on a daily driver device if that device is important. Beta 3 might be great but beta 4 might introduce new bugs that make it a mess.

All this being said, I have the beta version of iPadOS on my daily iPad. I don’t notice any issues. The thing is I just watch YouTube on it so if it completely crashed, I would be fine. I wouldn’t put it on something I needed for work or if it did something else I couldn’t live without.

Supposedly the public beta is going to be this dev beta 3 build, that’s why I was considering it.

Did you experience any sort of heating of the iPad during the current beta 3?

I didn’t know this.

Not at all. I have a 4th gen iPad Air so it doesn’t have the M series chip that probably gets hotter. Also I only use it for web browsing and YouTube so nothing crazy.

M4 11" iPadPro, I use it daily for productivity, no major issues with beta 1 or 2; just installed 3 so we'll see. No heat probs or significant battery drain, either. As others have said, though, it's a beta so stability isn't guaranteed.

I have just the one iPad and it does have beta on it. But - if it !@#&s the bed, I can live without it.

You can bet, my iPhone and my main Mac are not on beta ;)

B1 ran hot for me, B2 ran normal temp but had some quirks that were not showstoppers. I haven't used B3 enough to say definitively, but seems improved. I don't run beta on my iPhone any more until GM, then I run beta throughout the 0.x releases. I run beta on my iPad much earlier as it's not a critical device for me.

I normally wait till beta 4 or 5 for my iPad Pro. I don’t put betas on my phones anymore. This time, however, I got lured in and installed beta 2, now 3, on my iPad. Having been burned several times in the past, hence why I don’t put them on my phones anymore, I would say this is the smoothest beta we’ve had in a long time, at this stage of the game. I’ve had so few issues, they’re not even worth mentioning. My iPad is used for everything critical and non-critical. Now, all software at this stage will vary by how the individual uses the device, the device itself, and the apps that are installed. So no one can predict what your experience will be. But I’ve been doing this for ~13 years, and this is the best I’ve experienced, ever, at this point. To me, it’s close to a final release in stability. But, again, each user will have a unique perspective; some will be worse than mine.

I got burned with a dead iPhone X on a beta. I've always assumed it was the beta that caused something to overheat. Was out of warranty by a couple weeks. Ended up with a Samsung for a year. That sucked, so I've been hesitant to put betas on my phone after that.

As a public service announcement ...
1. Do NOT install beta software if you do not know how to revert back to the old OS.
2. No one knows what apps you are using, so no one can answer whether any beta is "stable enough"
3. Corollary to #2 - everyone's situation is different. So a beta OS will be fine for some and not so fine for others.

Regarding 1: I’ve been doing clean installs (restores) for a long time. Is my assumption that putting the device into DFU and restoring 18.5 back using my Mac is enough to revert back from the beta.

And no, I don’t care about the content, I always save/export the important documents and media beforehand.

You are not going to damage the battery with beta, but there is a chance you may brick the device. It takes lot more than overheating to wreck the battery in short time.
