Is everything okay with my 3GS?

This has happened twice so far in about 3 hour intervals
I had my iPhone asleep and I tried turning it out if sleep by hitting the home button and nothing happened . It just froze and was in a black screen for about 45 sec. When it finally came back on the screen flickered and went to the home screen. I then tried turning up the volume, and for every dot of volume increase it would flicker.
I'm loving the iPhone but was wondering what's going on

somethings definantly wrong

restart the phone (hold top and center buttons until you see the apple logo) and see if that works

if that doesn't work, plug it into itunes and do a restore
