iPhone X Is Face ID Always On and Scanning

For example, once I’m successfully scanned and I’m in my phone navigating around, is Face ID still scanning my face?

Or only during the time that it unlocks?

Face ID scanning is activated by either tapping the screen or raise-to-wake. However, Face ID will scan for auto-fill passwords for Safari, application purchases and Apple Pay/authentication. And then you have attention awareness as well that detects your Face during usage.

Turn Attention Aware features on iPhone X

Even if you don’t enroll in Face ID, the TrueDepth camera on iPhone X intelligently activates to support attention aware features, like dimming your display if you aren’t looking at your device or lowering the volume of alerts if you're looking at your device.

If you don’t want to use these features, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and turn off Attention Aware Features.

I get unlocking the phone and getting into certain apps (or saved passwords) but is it projecting on me while I’m doing other tasks like texting or emailing?

If you have attention aware on, yes your phone will be checking your face every few moments

Assuming you have attention aware turned off. Otherwise your face will be pulsed with to verify you are looking at the screen.
