Is Facebook Messenger Ok to DL now?

So is Facebook Messenger safe to Download and install now? I heard it was a huge privacy concern but it seems like a many are using it now as a stand alone app. What do you guys think?

It's pretty much has always been OK, for iOS at the very least (since in iOS you can individually grant or change different permissions).
