Is Force Touch considered to be hardware?

The force touch on my S3 stopped working a week or two ago. I did not purchase Apple Care + on it but am still within one year of purchase. Is it worth going to the Apple store to see if it would be covered under the standard warranty still? Everything else works fine but I can’t get to a few sub menus without FT.

Yes, if there were no drops/water damage to it it'd definitely be covered within the first year without the extended AppleCare+. They may want you to do a full wipe and watchOS restore to it to rule that out, but they will help you do that in store and determine whether it's a hardware issue. Set up a Genius Bar appt.
