Is using 2 stereo paired HomePod minis as default exclusive to the new 4K Apple TV, or will it work with the previous 4K Apple TV?

any help would be appreciated, I dug through the forums and couldn’t find the answer, sorry if it already has been!

This is currently being asked almost every day and answered, don’t know why search results aren’t finding it.

Apparently this relies on both tvOS 15 and HomePod OS 15 to work so (some?) older Apple TV boxes should be fine…not long to wait

No, is not. ARC (that is, sound from others HDMI connected devices, like a video game console) trough the Homepods), is what is exclusive to the new apple tv.

Default permanent audio output with the apple tv works with the first generation 4K apple tv as well.

This feature (default permanent audio output) exists since 14.2 for the original Homepod and TVOS 15 and Homepod OS 15 are adding support for the homepod mini. The mini, however, does not support virtual dolby 5.1,7.1 and Atmos like the original Homepod, so you´ll only get stereo sound.

I saw your replies to several other questions when searching, I almost just messaged you personally because it seemed like you would know the answer! But I couldn't find the answer to this specific question and after 10 minutes just thought I'd cast a line and hope someone knew. Anyway, thank you!

Makes sense, thanks for the info! I really appreciate it!
