Is iCloud photo backups different from Photo Stream?

I know Photo Stream is used to sync photos on all your iOS devices and limits it to 1000 photos. But if I want to backup my entire photo catalog (like 10GB worth), can I back them all up on iCloud? Or is iCloud and Photo Stream the same thing when it comes to photos?

Currently iCloud backup does include photos taken on the phone. Be aware that it is a backup and can only be used as part of a complete restore of an iOS device. There is no way to go to iCloud.com and see the photos and no way to verify the results of the backup. Ah thanks for clarifying. Does the backup then also backup videos as well or just photos?

iCloud backup backs up everything on your phone. Photos, videos, text messages, phone and application settings, etc.
