iPhone is imessage in IOS8 compatible with older phones on IOS5

My wife has an Iphone 3GS and is still on IOS5

Apple has signifacantly improved Imessage in IOS8, I would love to know if we can still send text and photos between IOS5 and IOS8 devices.

I can't see why not, but she wouldn't be able to receive the new things like voice messages and stuff like that.

Well you can send audio files to any iMessage user, it will appear as an attachment to click on.
For example: Use your Mac to send a song to a buddy -> works!

So it will likely send as attachment without getting the improved inline player view.

That being said, I also think that it should still be compatible in general.

All that is required for iMessage is two iPhones - so the answer is yes
