So I send my iPod Touch to apple in order to get it replaced. But they said it was perfect and they wrote in the e-mail, that they have put the newset firmware on it.

Is this just a standard letter or is iOS 4.2 already finished and put on i Devices?

Also I wanted to jailbreak my iPod... is that still possible with iOS 4.2?

But it's not a new iPod. It's my old iPod which had 4.1 on it.
I wanted to know if Apple puts the newest iOS on old iPods before the os is ready.

No it most certainly would not have 4.2 installed. It's not "Officially" out. The best way to check what the latest firmware available to the public is, is to open iTunes with your iOS device attached and hit "Check for updates"

If you sent it in a week after iOS 4.2 was released they would likely put it on if you hadn't.

There's zero chance of anything that runs through Apple's factories getting an OS before it's released. Quite the contrary, in fact. Apple's devices are often loaded with new software weeks or months behind schedule.

Thanks! I already thought it was just a standard phrase.

then that means 4.1 since 4.2 is not out yet.

Got my iPod Touch back today and it has 4.1.
Thanks to everyone and I think this can be closed now.
