My uncle has an iPhone 4 still running iOS 6 on it. I really would like to know if iOS 7.1 has really improved responsiveness and makes it much more useable? I am going to hold off on updating his phone before I hear some comments from others on here.

It's better, but you'll still find some noticeable lag. Some might argue that Apple could squeeze out a bit more from the A4 for iOS7, but that wouldn't really be cost-effective. My point is, iOS 6 is probably a better match, even though I do remember the 4 suffering some lag and stuttering from it too.

Besides, the A4 is old and during those initial years the hardware in smartphones changed dramatically. We won't really see that same sort of huge performance increase in relation to software.
