I have a 2nd gen iPad Pro 12.9 that’s in great shape, but doesn’t support iPadOS 18. Is 17 still safe to use? How long is it likely to stay that way if so?

Apple doesn't really promise anything, but they released 17.7.8 two months ago, and some devices have received security updates as long as five years after OS support ended.

In general, the risk of falling victim to a vulnerability due to an outdated i(Pad)OS is very low, unless you are someone specifically targeted by state actors or similar.

I’m not worried about that – it’d be nice if Apple were more transparent about what happens with EoL OS versions, though.
