is iPhone replacement from Apple Locked?

Since my iPhone 3Gs had problems, Apple, on the phone, replaced it (they sent a box and I sent it back). I'm in Canada and was using Bell. I sent the iPhone without the sim card.

I was wondering if that iPhone was Locked or not? I bought an iPhone 4 during the replacement process and want to sell this one on ebay.

Was the original factory unlocked?

If the original one was locked the replacement will be locked. If it was unlocked the replacement will be unlocked.
