Is iphone's search integration feature open to developers?

Will developers be allowed access to iphone's search feature?
This would be awesome to be able to search lexi drugs by just swiping left and searching for the drug.

Or is this a closed feature?

Not open, yet. All the needed API's are there (can receive a notification with, e.g. a search term, or a URL to launch the right "page" when user clicks on spotlight result) but Apple has't put the plumbing together yet.
