I' m wondering if it is a good idea to charge an iPhone with a car plug adapter through the cigarette lighter. I don't think cigarette lighter sockets have any surge protection and the electricity going towards the iPhone may damage it. This is especially a concern if you turn on or turn off your car with your iPhone still plugged in.

I've been charging frequently my iPhone's in my truck this way for the last 3 years and have never had a problem.

If it broke iphones, you'd think there would be less (if any) car chargers on the market

the ciggarette lighter itself has little surge protection

but that 12v to 5V adapter has a surger protector and an in-line fuse that will cut the current to your phone if it exceeds the specified limit of the fuse

so in other words you are safe
