Hello, I bought a LaCie external drive. When I plugged in the drive to my rMBP, a setup program from LaCie showed up to format the drive to Mac journal. The manual stated that after the formatting, one could also use disk utility from Mac OS to reformat the drive to Mac journal again. Is it advisable to do that? I am concerned that if I reformat the drive again, I may lose some disk space. Thanks.

It is not not advisable, a reformat cannot damage the HDD or the file system and you will not lose any storage space, just the standard 600 MB for partitioning info and so on, but that has already been "lost" with the LaCie formatting software, as it most likely uses the same commands Disk Utility uses.
