Even if it finishes charging half way thru the night

Any modern phone, including the iPhone, will stop charging when the battery is full, so from the phone's standpoint, no. I've been charging my phones overnight for years, including two generations of the iPhone.

You probably waste a little bit of electricity, so from an environmental standpoint, maybe it's bad, but you it would probably not be the easiest thing to change if you were trying to reduce your carbon footprint (see analysis)

Will it stay at 100%

It should if it's functioning properly -- if it doesn't, and you are on iOS 5, there are a few threads floating around over questions of this not happening, but that's what it normally does (that's what my 3GS does on iOS 5 and all previous versions of iOS).

Hit up some reputable sources on the care and feeding of lithium ion and lithium polymer cells. Questions about battery care are constantly asked on every device forum out there and the answers are always the same.

Totally anecdotal evidence, but my girlfriend has been charging her original iPhone every night for the last 4 years with no battery life issues.

Link to some of those threads? My phone gets to 100% discharges to about 90-91% and then starts charging again. I only found one person with the issue.

It's fine, these batteries were designed for it. In fact you should keep it plugged in as much as possible.

my iphone 4 is charged throughout my work day as i have it plugged in to my sound dock for music. it charges whiles it plays so from 9-5 it's pretty much 100% charged.

i've been doing this for 2 years and notice nothing wrong w/ my battery life.
