i use apps that require the nvidia gpu in my rMBP. i run them 99% of the time my mbp is on.

will that have any side-effects on it?
like on its life, or mbp overheating etc?

Only side affect is that the nVida card will eat your battery. You will notice lower battery life but thats about it.
 
I use gfxcardstatus to force discrete when plugged in and force integrated when on battery. i haven't tried any gaming on battery yet, but integrated works perfectly well for full-screen HD video and any other normal use.

i use gfxcardstatus too, but just to know what its currently using.

I've noticed my macbook getting really hot when running nvidia and 10x cooler when on intel integrated, is that ok?
