hey,

I have a iPhone X and want to use a sleeve/pouch with a magnet so I can easily “close” the sleeve and my iPhone cannot fall out.

I heard that magnets may interfere with the technique?

Thanks for your help

You mean something like the Apple Folio case? https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MQRW2/iphone-x-leather-folio-cosmos-blue

But, maybe a little cheaper? :) If it's designed similarly, you should be fine. I think what you're talking about is the wireless charging not working if you have metal in the way? The Qi charging coil inside the iPhone X is in the centre of the device. You can't get metal between that coil and your wireless charger or charging will not be possible.

Any Apple partner making cases for the iPhone X should be ensuring that there's no interference with wireless charging with their products.

What I meant is a pouch like this
https://m.ebay.de/itm/Handarbeit-Ec...et-Case-Brieftasche-/253165341632?_mwBanner=1

You see that there is a strap which wraps around the pouch and is fixed with a magnet.
The question is if this is harmful or can interfere e.g. with the compass or Bluetooth?

See this article which refers to the iPhone 6 Plus.

Ok, so that case is basically like having your phone in a wallet or purse. ie. you won't be using the iPhone X while IN the case.

Which pretty much negates any comments on how the magnet could interfere with any operation of the iPhone, as they won't be around it while you're using it.

The only note on that Apple support document was this:
  1. For iPhone models that feature optical image stabilization: A metallic case or magnetic lens could interfere with this feature. Try taking a picture without the case or lens, and then compare the quality.

You also won't be able to wirelessly charge the iPhone X while it's in this case - you could wipe out the magnetic strips on any credit/debit cards if you attempted to do so. The cards (and the thickness of the case) would also make wireless charging all but impossible.

You're also not going to be using the compass app when you can't see it. :)

I don't see that the magnet should be interfering with any of the non-mechanical aspects of the phone - Bluetooth, GPS or NFC.

Alright, thanks again.

I cannot charge it wirelessly while in the case? Are you sure that it’s because of the magnet? Or is a sleeve too thick anyway?

Well, what if my phone is connected to a speaker via Bluetooth and it’s in the sleeve? Won’t it work then?

If you open that folio, like that one picture where the phone is partly out and they're showing the cards? In that circumstance, if you laid it onto the wireless charger with the folio open, so that side of it and the cards aren't interfering, then you may be able to wirelessly charge in the case (you won't know until you try it).

Again...Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, Wifi, Cellular - these are NON-mechanical features of your phone. Mechanical features of your phone could be impacted by a magnet (compass, optical image stabilization, haptic engine) - if the magnet was close to any of those areas when you tried to use them.

I mean, can I charge my iPhone X wirelessly WHILE in a pouch WITHOUT a magnet?
Or isn’t this possible anyway e.g. because it’s too thick?

I actually already answered that above, but, ok, yes, you can have a case or a folio on your iPhone X and you can use wireless charging.

The only considerations would be that the case shouldn't be too thick or made of materials (eg metals) that would block the electro-magnetic fields that are carrying the energy to the induction coil.

Haha yeah I didn’t really get that in the previous message (non native speaker).
But then, will a magnet in the pouch interfere with the wireless charging?

I’d be more concerned about the magnet coming in contact with the magnetic strip on the credit cards, to be honest.

It shouldn't, no - provided it isn't between the wireless charger and the charging coil in your phone.

Metal blocks the electromagnetic waves needed for wireless charging.....so it can't be between.

The wireless chargers could do that too...the EMF waves could easily wipe out whatever's on that stripe. :) The folio that the op linked - I see a LOT of customer calls going in - people will try to do wireless charging through their credit/debit cards. You know it's gonna happen!!! :D

I won’t put my cards in such a case ;-)
