is it normal for a brand-new iPhone 14 Pro to come out of the sealed box with 0% battery?

my friend picked up her iPhone 14 Pro from the Apple Store in NoVa on Friday. (gold, 512gb)

This morning, we unboxed it and the phone would not turn on. After plugging it in, the battery started charging from 0%. After a couple of hours, we returned to the phone and it was fully charged and turned on. Everything went fine after that....

However, I just curious. Is that normal? Of all the iPhones that I've owned(6, 7, SE, XR, 12 Pro, 13 Pro Max, 14 Pro Max), I never saw one out of the box with a completely depleted battery... usually they were at least 60%, 70% or more. I experience something like this with the 13 Pro last year... but that one was returned for some other issue....(screen)

It isn't usual in any of my experiences either. Still the main thing is whether the iPhone performs as expected and the battery isn't defective, not where the battery life is currently at when unboxed.

I googled this "issue" and couldn't find anything similar, so I assume it's unusual.

My friend does have AppleCare on it... but if this unusual issue will cause a problem several month down the road, I figure that it's best for her to just exchange it right now within the 14-day return period? Although.... I kind of doubt that the Apple Store has another one to exchange at the moment.... :(

it isn't unusual that it can come 0% out of the box. Most of my purchase did come 80+% out of the box. There was 1 that was like 5% out of the box. This was because by the time i unboxed it, it was already turned on. Somehow it must turned on while it was still inside. Anything can happen.

I've never had that happen to me, or any of my co-workers so I would say it is not normal.

people must not want the smaller 14 Pro much? we just found another Apple Store 20 minutes away that had the 14 Pro in stock.(still 256gb, but in silver, which my friend is fine with) The order has just gone through... once it comes back as ready for pick up, my friend will go pick it up tomorrow morning.

I kind of told her to do that... I mean, why take the chance, no matter how remote, that the battery doesn't last as long by this time next year. besides, she is still well within the 14-day return

Extreme states of charge aren’t good for battery health. Just like when you charge to 100% and leave it there.

wait... I thought iPhone would just stop charging after 100%? (either via Lightning or MagSafe) Or am I wrong?

my chargers are plugged into a timed outlet.... I press the button and the outlet is switched off after 3 hours.(which is long enough for most smartphones)

My iPhone 5 came with a flat battery. It may not have been charged correctly during manufacturing. If the phone works correctly and you get decent standby & SOT then what's the problem?

iPhone 5 with flat battery? it must have been a traumatic experience if you still remember after all these years? :( :( :(

edit: who am I to talk... I still remember when my family's very first black and white TV being delivered.... and the first thing that my parents did was close the accordion-style lid and locking it right in front of me. (yes, yes, I'm that old)

The electrodes of Li ion batteries physically change in volume during charge and discharge. Extreme states physically stress the battery and can literally crack the materials inside the cell. Maintaining 100% or 0% is bad. That’s why Apple has optimized battery charging.

Ha. I just remember that it was the only one to have a flat battery upon opening the box.

I don't know if it's possible, but maybe it turned on inside the box during shipping.

That is likely possible, it happened to one of my iphone XS last time I purchased one and it was already turned on when I unboxed it and the battery was already down at 5%. I found it odd but I ended up returning that one at the time.

No. Return it.

They will replace the battery with a new one so all is good - they better that is…

Slightly abnormal considering it’s the newest generation. I’ve bought phones in the past that were new, but a generation or two old and the devices were depleted. I assume that was from sitting on shelves for so long.

As someone else mentioned, if it charges up and the health is at 100%, I’d probably keep it. Test for a few days. Otherwise, it can’t hurt to take it up with Apple.
