Relatively speaking of course. If I am in an app and I press the home button it takes at least a full second before displaying the home screen. This seems like a ridiculously long time for a device with an A8 processor. I'd have expected it to be nearly instantaneous.

My iPod gen 6 is about as fast as my iPhone 6s so I am not sure why yours maybe slower unless there is not enough memory free.

There is a (slightly less than) 1 second delay programmed in on most things you can do with the home button (for double clicking etc). Is this your first iOS device?

OK that sort of makes sense but even a single click in an app takes a full second to get to the home screen.

It's not programmed to be instant. You can test it, if you're in a folder and tap the background to get out of it, it will close instantly, while if you use the home button to close it there will be a slight delay. If it's more than one second then there may be a problem.
