Is it normal for VPN to break upon sleep/wake?

I've noticed this and it's quite annoying. My VPN just breaks every time I unlock my iPad/iPhone. I'm not using a VPN app but rather I have configured VPN to work with the tools iOS 8 provides.

Yes it's normal. Though sometimes it does seem to hold the connection. But typically it will break upon sleep.

It seems it disconnects less when connected to power, at least that is my experience.

One of the first things I noticed about the OpenVPN app was that it maintained a VPN connection much, much better than the iOS PPTP or L2TP does...even when switching from cell to wifi.

Wireless connections go into low power/sleep mode themselves. This breaks active links like VPN.

I'll have to give OpenVPN a try, thanks for the input here. It just baffled me, glad it wasn't just me.
