In windows, we are told that users should never be signed in as administrator for security reasons. We are told to make a separate account that doesn't have administrator privileges and sign in with an administrator password whenever you have to install software for example.

In os x, I see that i'm set as administrator. Is it ok to be administrator in os x or should I create another user account?

Yes it is completely fine. There are no security gains to not having your main account be an admin account. Those gains that you once had in Windows, are no longer overly relevant with the release of Windows Vista and its User Account Control feature. They were very important in Windows 2000 and XP though.
