Because the macbook pro turns off and on so quickly, I find myself just shutting it down all the time instead of putting it so sleep to save battery, is this something that's going to wear down the machine?

No, but there is no reason for it either. My 13" 2015 rMBP in sleep mode will standby for weeks on a charge.

Do just whatever you want.
I usually let it sleep, but I reboot every 2-3 days.

The only time I power mine down is to put it in the bag when I travel.

I'll guess that I'm "old school", but I routinely power all my Macs down and night, and then reboot them in the morning or as needed.

Something about a restart that "cleans things out"...
