I saw this interesting little article on the nano in today's guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,3604,1578938,00.html

This seemed very appropriate to me as, although I already have an iPod and don't really need another one, I do want to get a nano as well for some reason!

Apologies if this has already been posted - couldn't see it anywhere

Is it OK to own more than One iPod

No, it's not, please turn in your excess iPod unit to the nearest iPod Enforcement Officer.

Hmm

The Nano is unnecessary, profoundly so if you've already got an iPod. But Apple's greatest gift is its grasp of what the thinker Virginia Postrel calls "the substance of style": the ever increasing importance of aesthetics in mass culture. The Nano creates a need where none existed because it feels like progress: it's so much smaller and more beautiful. But did the older iPod really feel like lead in your pocket, or look dated? Now, seeing the Nano ads, it's beginning to seem that way ...

These are dangerous waters for any firm. Apple has to avoid giving the impression that its products are built to obsolesce, that anything you buy now, however pretty and functional it seems, will be superseded. (Consider Apple's "clamshell" laptops, praised when released, but comical now. Even 2003's iPod Mini seems like yesterday's toy.)

This is why reports that the Nano scratches easily are a potential PR disaster - especially for Apple, whose designs target an especially anally retentive, perfectionistic personality strain, exemplified by founder Steve Jobs.
I thought those paragraphs were especially interesting. It is quite fascinating that so many of us already own iPods and yet can't seem to help but to want a nano. Heh, and that comment about Jobs being anal retentive... hee.

:edit: I 'only' have one iPod, a 20gig 3rd gen which never leaves my desk. What a waste I know, but truth be told, it doesn't fit in almost all of my clothing pockets! I was planning on getting a shuffle... but now... I'm definitely eyeing that nano.

the only reason i didnt get the nano at the time of release was because it didnt have the money for it.

I didnt need it and i can only see that now.

I already have two, but ones a shuffle which i think is different

The shuffle i got for sports. It would be foolish to use a normal hd ipod for running, i broke my last one that way...

If you have one but want another, if you want the nano, you could put it to use for sports.

Any more than 2 i couldnt justify unless i was collecting, and that counts as a hobby im sure.

That's like asking if it's okay to have more than one pair of pants. Sure, I could survive on a single pair of Levi's, but really, would I want to?

Well... does anyone really need more than one of anything?*
Bit of a pointless article I thought.

*and yes, i've considered the fact that you need more than one shoe etc, just in case any of you smart asses out there feel the need to comment :p :p

I bought my 60GB ipod even though I only had about 10GB of music. I did that so incase I ever go on a massive music buying/stealing music spree I would have the space and wouldn't need to get another iPod. Hopefully I don't go over 60GB. Plus I liked using it as an external drive.

I guess it's alright, I mean it's your money so you do whatever you want with it.

Lightweights

I have 6.

There is my 40gb photo (the flagship model).
My old 3g that is now in my wife's possession.
My old 2g, now longer in service, but works and is used as a piece of art now.
My 4gb silver mini. Used for running.
My 512mb iPod shuffle, used for quick jaunts around the city and as my wife's running companion.

And number 6, we have a new nano on the way. We are such proud parents.

It is ok, all but one of our iPods is in regular service.

Sure it is...I have 5.
2 I can understand but 5? What do you need 5 for?
And we are all anally retentive? Maybe they're right :p
I don't need a nano, but I really want one.

is it ok? of course is it.

would I? nope! i can only love one iPod at one time. plus the resale value on those is brilliant :D
