I just got an OWC 5 port Thunderbolt hub and found out I have to download ejector software: For Silicon machines to have SW load you have to adjust startup security to Reduced and allow extensions from identified developers. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac...-settings-startup-disk-a-mac-mchl768f7291/mac. After that go to Security and Privacy Preferences/settings and make sure OWC is set for allowed.

I am a lifelong Windows user and was pretty comfortable doing technical stuff like this on my windows laptop. I know ZERO about Macos and am not comfortable with this! Also, I don’t know what it means, isn’t it a risk to run my Mac with reduced security? Or is that necessary to run any non-App store SW? Can I run the SW and then set the Mac back to full security? thanks. Donna

I don’t think the OWC ejector software is required. It is a convenience for when you have multiple external disks plugged into the hub and you want to detach the hub. The ejector software will eject all the disks so you don’t have to manually eject them one at a time. The software probably adds a menu bar item.

“Reduced security” sounds scarier than it is. “Reduced security” allows one to install signed (i.e. approved by Apple) legacy kernel extensions. Even though you can install them, the extensions still require your explicit approval. Even so, the risk to your Mac is that you might install a legacy kernel extension which could compromise the stability of macOS. Only obtain such software from reputable sources. As long as you have the legacy kernel extension software installed, you’ll need stay in “Reduced security”.

Thank you! I agree, I don’t need the OWC ejector SW. I always try to obtain SW from reputable sources, but it can be difficult to determine that sometimes.….I could see myself accidentally installing compromised SW!! I’d prefer not to run in “Reduced Security” mode. So, hopefully, I will not have a need to install ‘signed‘ SW.
