No, that's the contacts making er, umm, contact with the sim. Your signal strength is dependent on the phones antenna, the buildings or environment you're in and potentially any case you weave on the phone.

Well I've seen other sims and no marks..

These look deep

Yes, they do look deeper than I've seen before. Are you going from having service to no service at all?

I get signal all the time except I have dropped to 4G.

I talked with AT&T and they said they would send me another one so I'm praying it works.

I really want 5 bars 7-8 Mbps. I had it for a second tonight. Now again it's gone.

:( :( :(

I seriously doubt it's the SIM card, but we can hope that it is. :) Really all it does is provide authentication to the network, not provide coverage or signal strength.

Ahhhh ok :(

It's so strange it gave me 5 bars after popping it into my iPhone 4 with a sim adapter then back into my iPhone 5

I really can't explain.

Be careful, you might get a mean look from the Apple guy. Have you tried cleaning your Safari cache?

So lets get this straight, you got a MEAN look from the guy at the apple store because you thought your iPhone was bent and making scratches on your SIM card and you also wanted to know if your screen is as sharp as your iPhone 4 screen and you wanted him to tell you how to clean dust off of your screen so you could see to empty your cache but you couldn't do any of this because your moms number is on your iMessage and she couldn't destroy her iP4 to get an iP5 for $229 right?

Scratches are good. It shows you are making a good connection to the phone. No scratches at all would be a concern.
