I have an external HDD connected to my Macbook Pro with media files on it that I would like to play on my :apple:TV. Is it possible to stream those files while the Macbook is in sleep mode?

When the computer is in sleep mode, it does not communicate with anything. It pretty much stops all processes so the answer is no! That's why servers have to run 24/7 for you to have access to a website and its files!

In my experience, if you have wake-on-lan activated and your book is connected to power brick, it will be woken up by aTV when you start the playback.

No.

If you want external storage that is not dependent on a computer, buy a NAS.
