I have "Silenced Unknown Callers" enabled, but occasionally such a caller needs to be answered, such as a delivery driver. Is it possible to answer such a call? When I click on the banner that says a silenced call is incoming, rather than answering the call, it calls the person back, which seems odd. Thanks.

If a delivery driver might show up - just use the mute switch instead. You’ll see the incoming phone call banner when anyone calls (and you can answer if you want) but hear no ringer.

More of us should request this feature. Also to block unknown calls or 1-800/900 #'s as well. Telco's are failing at protecting their customers from scams or annoyances.

Here's the place to do so:

AFAIK It’s because the call is sent to voicemail therefore the banner isn’t actually the live incoming call that’s why when you hit the banner it makes the call back.

You can already do this to some extent. It exactly though.

key part of that link:
Calls from unknown numbers are silenced and sent to your voicemail, and appear in your recent calls list.

That is not blocking it's just redirecting the call like double-tapping a volume button (to silence) and double-tapping the sleep/wake/power button.

I want to BLOCK as in the annoying caller does NOT get through, does NOT goto voicemail and spamming and filling up my voicemail which then takes more of my time to listen and delete (I don't have visual voice mail and even then same deal).

Also note:
Try blocking another iOS user that has iMessage / iCloud enabled.
receive an iMessage. Tap their contact at the top of the iMessage, more, edit, then block.
upon any initiated phone call or iMessage from them immediately goes through and it reverts your 'blocked' to 'unblocked' This has been an issue since iOS 11.

I have an ex that continuously does this every few months or so, and yes I'm a sucker to start talking/flirting for that little warmth but I've changed my number (not before deleting her contact and ensuring not in my WhatsApp list as well but I'm not changing my iCloud primary address. Therein still leads potential she can do it again even though my number is not in her contact list but I can receive via the email address. Something I'm considering disabling as long as it doesn't affect family members/friends reaching me via iMessage.

That would explain the problem, but if you're right, the feature is misnamed. It should be called "Send Unknown Callers Directly to Voicemail."

It's a great feature, but at least once a week a driver or someone calls and we end up playing tag for a minute or two. Actually silencing such calls, but with an "answer?" option, would be better. Thanks.

Whatever the name it’s very clear when you switch it on what it does.

No, it's not clear at all that there would be no possible way to answer such call

OK the clarity is a matter of opinion ..... its not clear to you ........ but its clear to me that it gets sent to voicemail

I know.

You have to do this with every unknown caller. If “unknown” is part of the display name (spoofed or not set) that method does not block all.

Furthermore any caller without a caller ID that is for the purpose of harrassmebt or spamming simply changes the number rapidly - just like corporations’ I.T. can via Cisco CUCM (I do this weekly for new hire setups btw, not spamming so I get how spoofing works).

As I said before, also when you attempt to block another riMessage user, then messaging you or calling just simply removes the block.

I’m familiar with how to block in iOS, I’m stating its very basic very poorly thought out in execution by Apple. It’s as if those in charge of iPhone dialer live in a pristine world without any issues.

Send feedback if you haven’t already.

So …… you know how to block ….. you know how to send to voicemail …… what exactly do you want ?

I see Silence Unknown Callers as a middle ground solution between simply shutting off the ringer and total blocking (no voicemail at all).

There are no easy answers. Just letting a call ring four times before it goes to voicemail is annoying, too, even if the ringer is muted or if you're using Apple Watch and covering the Watch display to silence the incoming call.

The idea of Silence Unknown Callers is to automate this - if they're not in Contacts, bam to voicemail for screening. The Notification is to let you immediately see what call has been diverted, not to give you a chance to answer. Unlike a blocked call, it's still in Recents if you want to call back immediately.

Part of the solution is to promptly create contacts for all incoming numbers that you want to receive calls from in the future - something you can do easily even for Silenced calls, since they still appear in your Recents.

Yes, it's presumably possible for Apple to allow for one or two rings prior to diverting to voicemail - yet another extra option in Settings. Maybe it's enough time to answer, maybe not. After about four rings it goes to voicemail anyway (that interval is normally adjustable by you phone company), so the window for answering is always going to be pretty narrow.

So …… you know how to block ….. you know how to send to voicemail …… what exactly do you want ?

1. Block ALL “unknown” or hidden caller ID calls in 1 step in the system - not a piece meal 1 for 1 for every instance.

2. When blocking an iCloud/iMEssage user that that person remains blocked by me. No half-stepping.

3. Prevent 1-8xx or 1-9xx numbers from calling me but allow sms IF register by carriers around the world from their system not for a service they sell out.

Hiding or silencing unknown calls is not a solution it’s half stepping.

Back in the s60 hey day you got 1 app and it did it all and very well. This isn’t the case anymore on iOS. Not looking at Android cause I highly doubt I’ll ever try that junk again.
