Is it possible to downgrade to 4.2.1

why exactly would you want to?

If you are having issues or worse performance/battery life/apps crashing your phone probably had software corruption to begin with. Restore and setup as new device then resync your data, you'll be a happy camper.

Other than that, I wouldn't see a need to downgrade.

I am seriously bummed. I went straight from 4.1 to 4.3, and now TextFree dies upon launch. I am in the process of restoring and setting up new as suggested but I seriously doubt it will help. I can't live without my TextFree!

You might be able to do it without using Tinyumbrella and saved SHSH blobs for today and maybe a few days after the official 4.3 came out.
Apple might close that window shortly like they usually do so you need to hurry.

Thanks agentphish, I did as you directed, then updated my apps, and now TextFree is working again! Of course I lost all of my folders and screen layouts, but that will actually give me a chance to do a better job with them next time. Tanks again!
