Is it possible to extend an existing wifi network with an airport extreme?

Hi guys.

I was wondering if the following is possible. There is a wireless network at my friends house and it doesn't reach the basement. He has a linksys n router and wants to extend the range but can't get an access point (long story why). Is it possible to use my airport extreme as a wireless extender? If so does anyone have any tips of how I would set this up?

Airport devices can only extend the range of other Airport WiFi networks. They cannot extend a Linksys, Netgear, or any other WiFi network.
