Is it possible to fade in/out sound like on an iPhone

On an iPhone or iPod touch, when one sound wants to play (IE- New Mail Message) and you are playing music, the music fades and the New Mail Message sound play and then the music fades back in.

On a Mac, I am playing music in iTunes, but the Mac then announces the time on the hour and both get interrupted.
