Is it possible to have a chat thread in community discussion?

Like the title says...

In another forum I post on--there is a designated chat thread where we can all banter on about whatever--this generally helps keep the rest of the forum "clean" and provides for much enjoyment for the many frequenting members.

Is this a possibility?

I posted a tentative one in the community section and mods you can remove it if you wish...if it's possible, can we get the a-ok and chat in that one thread?

It seems like it would be too hard to follow and it could lead to confusion with alternative threads being created. You know, like this one?

I posted that thread thinking we could start one...someone mentioned I may want to ask mods...hence this thread.

They can close it if they'd like...or both.

I was just thinking it'd be a) helpful b) fun

I searched before I posted that one and couldn't find anything...hence why I posted that one to start with.

It's a forum policy not to allow chat threads because they clutter the Forum Spy and New Posts displays and because they encourage posting habits that would probably show up in other discussions. For example, chatter in news story discussions would make it harder for everyone else to find the substantive posts.

I had just found that this became the outlet for those chatters in the other forum. But I'm all about obeying the rules--it's all good.

I just really like the people here and enjoy talking with them.

You could use our IRC channel if you just want to chat with people, not many of the total MR users are on there or use IRC at all though.

Back in the day when Blue Velvet was a moderator she used to create a thread most Friday evenings for random Friday night chit-chat and then wasteland it on Saturdays. So there is some precedent for chat threads...

Heh, you'd think not - IRC is kinda old but I'd comfortably say it's still alive and well. The room we have is not busy all the time but it's a good place to go.
