On Android, when a VPN is enabled and connected, there is an icon near the top right corner of the screen. Is it possible to have something like that on iOS without having to check the VPN app that I'm connected?

I don't know if the VPN has been disconnected or not.

I guess I don't really notice. I just swipe down the control center or swipe right to get to the vpn widget to see the status. I'm also not really worried about not having a vpn.

You can create a Widgy homescreen widget:

I feel like that's a security risk. On my Pixel, I know if my connection is secured or not.

If you are relying on the VPN for security you should know VPNs on iOS have been and continue to be a joke. Some processes bypass the VPN and there's no network kill switch in case the VPN loses connection (which may happen often on iOS).

There is an Icon when you swipe down. Still better than checking inside the App.
Yes, but not quite the same as having the icon at the top where I can always see it. Sometimes my VPN gets disconnected for whatever reason. Your method is better than none, but still requires more involvement than necessary.

That’s essentially what the “kill switch” feature is for:
