Is it possible to import from one app to another?

As a switcher, Mac OSX continues to amaze me with it's cleverness.

But here's a tough one. I use VueScan and wanted to be able to have Apps (iPhoto and DevonThink) import directly from it, which would mean they'd have to capture it's output.

Is that possible? Is OSX that clever?
