I decided to try running Panther on my newly acquired Mid-2005 12" iBook G4. Now, I know that Panther is not supported by this model officially, but from what I gathered, the hardware should totally be supported: my A1104 12" PowerBook's touchpad totally works on Panther, and it seems that on Tiger, the iBook uses the same video driver as included in Panther (the Radeon9700.kext is even the same version).

Any Panther disc won't boot of course, but I installed 10.3 on a PowerBook and swapped the drive; so far the system boots into a black screen with the mouse, even in verbose mode. Can't find anything online concerning this.

Anybody tried to do this or has some tips on how to debug it?

I presume you’ve updated to 10.3.9? Try attaching an external monitor to see what, if anything, might be on there. Can you move the cursor beyond the iBook’s screen by any chance?

Wrong  didn't update it. I used a 10.3.7 install disc though. The mouse moves around but only the external one, I will study the exact behavior and report later. Can't connect an external screen since I don't have a MiniVGA cable.

Most likely it is missing some drivers. Most versions of Mac OS are not compatible with hardware systems released with a new version of the OS.

I put the hard drive back into a PowerBook to install updates. The NTFS flash drive refused to work on Panther, so I enabled Remote Login and transfered updates via scp. I got the same result, iBook boots Panther into a black screen with a mouse.
However this time, since I enabled Remote Login, I plugged in the Ethernet jack to check if it works, and sure enough, machine appeared on the router's list, I ssh'ed into it and voila! It works just fine!

I also installed Vine Server (VNC) on it, but it refuses to start with the message screen format not supported.

And for comparison, these are system logs from starting on PowerBook compared to the iBook. Everything seems fine to me.
