Hello,
I'm thinking about getting an Apple TV and then hacking it so that it can play .avi movies etc. I occasionally record TV in HD from my cable box attached to my MacBook Pro via via Firewire, I use good old iRecord for this. I was wondering if I could somehow attached my MBP to the Apple TV and save to the Apple TV's hard drive instead of using the MBP's hard drive.

thanks for any info,
Steve

You might be able to do it, but you need ssh / ftp access. You could also use Macfusion an the AppleTV to achieve this.
The easier solution would be to save your files to an external HD and then connect that (USB) hard drive to your AppleTV and play the files on the ATV.
