I know that I could pay the $20/mo for the service, but I use it so infrequently that it would not be worth that for me. Some of the information I've read online indicates that it should be free for me as well, but with the use of a third-party app, which I believe I'd need to be jailbroken to use.

Can anyone provide advice?

I have an iPhone5 on iOS6, so jailbreaking is not an option.

Depends on your current iOS version. If you're running the latest ios6, jailbreak is not availabley, yet, for that iOS.

If you are running an earlier version of iOS, then you can Jailbreak and run several tethering apps. These usually work well, but the carrier may be able to detect unauthorized tethering.

I've had success with Tether.com's service, which is an annual fee and very affordable.
