Is it possible to "wormhole" the contents of "Downloads" folder to external HD?

Hello!

Is it possible to "wormhole" the contents of "Downloads" folder to external HD?

Basically I just want something where I can still maintain downloading things to the "Downloads" folder, but have the "primary" Downloads folder as like an alias or something, with the actual contents on my external..

Is this possible? Thank you!

Basically it uses Mac Automator to automate a duplication of the folder, in this case the Downloads folder to a destination, in this case a folder on the external drive.
