i am selling one of my iphone 3gs and deleted every thing manually on it so it remains on older baseband and ios 4.0...the way i did this is i unchecked every thing from itunes .. songs ,videos contacts ,email account ..and did the sync ... i dont see any personal info on the phone any more...

i was just wondering would it be easily possible for the new owner to retrieve any of my email etc some way as i didn't do a complete restore ?

I'd go ahead and go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings just to be safe.

you should delete it as the poster above me said and them hook up with itunes just for as long as it takes for it to show up the homescreen then sell it. the new owner may not know how to handle iphones and doesn't have itunes.

You should be ok.
I dont think the new owner could retrieve any of that stuff back or if he would even want to.
Be carefull when doing the "erase all data and settings" cause your phone might get stuck at the apple logo and you might have to restore it and get stuck updating it to the latest 4.3

how comes? i have never heard of that.

Not always but it does happen.
If the phone is JB its a guarantee it will happen and you'd be stuck at the Apple logo.
And since the OP is trying to sell it on 4.0 so it is unlockable I wouldnt take the risk on doing an "erase all".
Up to him though.

ok. but if one doesn't jailbreak there's no fear.

I'd restore the phone first though, just to play it safe

I've used that numerous times and never been stuck on the Apple logo. I've even done it after being jailbroken. It's always worked like a charm for me.

I've done the erase all content thing many, many times...never had a problem. I've done it jailbroken and I've done it in factory settings.

Anybody know whether 'Erase all settings' actually overwrites the data with random information? Otherwise, it's not completely safe....

this should answer that http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2110

the basics is yes, it should get rid of any chance of data recovery.

the possibility of it going into the connect to itunes mode is explained as a loss of battery power according to that article.

I've done it to, but I sure don't do it anymore. I have seen many posts right here in this forum, that go something like this...."I just did a reset all content on my xxx iPhone and it is now stuck at the apple logo, please help".

i personally have lost a unlock on one of my iphones 4 just by doing 'Erase all settings' ... i was stuck on apple logo and had to go to next baseband... so cant even think of doing 'Erase all settings' ....

how easy is it to retrieve information if its deleted thru itunes ? can a everyday iphone user do it ?

Nope, they can't! Heck, some of them don't even know how to get data off of a perfectly working iPhone, much less one that is locked in recovery mode.
